(BEDFORD) - Briar Avery Shipwash is the first New Year’s baby.
Jacqueline Rathel's water broke at 8 a.m. New Year's Eve and she anticipated she would give birth sometime before the ball dropped. It took 20 hours for Briar to enter the world.
Briar was born at 4:24 a.m. on New Year's Day at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 12.2 ounces, and was delivered by Dr. Becky Allmon. Rathel's due date was Dec. 31.
Briar's father Harry Shipwash was in the delivery room for his birth. Briar is the Bedford couple's first child and they didn't know the sex of their baby before he arrived.
The couple will receive several gifts from St. Vincent Dunn, including a prayer blanket, a case of diapers, a $100 gift certificate and breastfeeding supplies.
