(WASHINGTON) - Fire investigators have determined an exploding furnace was the cause of a Thursday night house fire in Washington.
Firefighters were called out at 9:40 pm to 706 Front Street to find the home engulfed in flames. Washington Fire Chief David Rhoads says, Beth Landreth had only been home a short while after being hospitalized for the past three weeks.
Medical personnel who were helping her into the house turned up the thermostat. About 10 to 15 minutes later the furnace exploded.
Landreth and a friend, Sheryl Tracy were able to escape the home, owned by Ambrose Dant.
Chief Rhoads says that the Washington Fire Department was on the scene until midnight and the home sustained major damage.
