(BEDFORD) - North Lawrence Community Schools will start school on August 8th in 2013.
The school board voted Thursday to implement what Assistant Superintendent Gary Conner called a "modified" calendar, which calls for the first day for teachers to be Aug. 7 and the first student day to be Aug. 8.
Roger Moon of the Times-Mail reports that the calendar reflects 180 instructional days with May 29 as the last day for students. With April 28 through May 9 is set aside as the window for statewide testing.
The calendar features a full week off for spring and fall breaks and two full weeks off at Christmas.
In discussing the options, board members focused on the need for making a decision now so the nearby school systems that send students to the North Lawrence Career Center will be equipped with information for setting their own calendars.
He also said he has heard that Mitchell and Orleans school systems are "intrigued" by the balanced calendar, as are a number of systems farther north in the state.
Board members suggested the decision would affect other entities and activities, including child care centers, the Bedford swimming pool, the county 4-H fair and school construction projects.
