(SALEM) - The Washington County Food Bank just received a ton of food - literally.
The Leader Democrat reports that over the past weeks, the youth at the Salem Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been gathering food donations at JayC Food Store and Save-a-Lot.
On Monday, they delivered the 1,000 pounds of food they and the church gathered along with a matching donation from the Bishop's Storehouse, an outreach ministry of the Morman Church out of Salt Lake City, Utah that gives to those in need through local congregations.
After the tornadoes this past spring, the Bishop's Storehouse sent down three trucks full of supplies for those affected by the storms and state organizations of the church send teams around the country to disaster areas.
"We set out to gather 1,000 items and we have well over 1,000 items right now," said Dr. Stephen Kemker, a local physician and bishop in the church. "We try to do what we can, but the need is so great. At every church in the state, they do the same sort of donations to food banks when the bishop sees a need."
The primary reason for making a donation of this size is to give to those in need, but Kemker hopes other area ministers will look into the possibility of coming together to help those in need in Washington County.
