(EASTERN GREENE COUNTY) - Students, teachers and staff in the Eastern Greene School District will receive a longer fall break and an additional holiday included in the 2013-2014 school calendar that was approved Monday night by the Eastern Greene Board of School Trustees.
Nick Schneider of the Greene County Daily World reports that the board changed President's Day on February 17 to a no school day by a unanimous vote.
On the recommended calendar that was endorsed by the administration and the Eastern Teacher's Organization, President's Day was listed as a possible snow make-up day.
Fall break, which during the current calendar was for two days, will run Oct. 14-18 -- a full-five day week next school year, according to the new calendar.
Other than those changes, the calendar does not deviate much from the current year.
"It is very similar to the calendar that we have now (for the 2012-13 school year," said Superintendent Ty Mungle.
Mungle pointed out that the calendar has to be a blend of the calendars used in the neighboring Monroe County Community School District and the Bedford North Lawrence School District.
The calendar also includes: two weeks for Christmas or Winter Break Dec. 23-Jan. 3; and a one-week Spring Break March 24-28.
The school year for students starts Aug. 5 and ends May 16 -- providing there are no snow days used.
The 180-day student days calendar has snow make-up days built in for May 19, May 20, May 21, May 22 and May 23. In the event another day is needed, the calendar calls for classes on Saturday, April 5 -- the day after Spring Break ends.
Graduation is scheduled for Saturday, May 24.
