(BEDFORD) - Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits for babies and moms and is far better for babies than formula.
Hoosier Uplands is forming a breastfeeding coalition and is inviting local people and agencies to a meeting Feb. 13 at the Purdue Extension office on the courthouse square.
Gwyn Pentzer, LPN for Early Head Start and a certified lactation specialist.says, women have been convinced by formula companies their product is just as good as what a mother produces.
Communities that have a breastfeeding support group like La Leche League, and peer counselors at doctor's and WIC offices, can have a big impact on improving breastfeeding statistics.
Once the coalition meets, Pentzer says it will identify some community goals and ways to raise awareness. As an example, she said the coalition could create a lactation station at the county fair as one way to encourage breastfeeding in the community.
The first meeting of a breastfeeding coalition in Lawrence County will be Feb. 13 from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the Purdue Extension office, at 924 16th St. Feel free to bring a sack lunch. For questions or to make reservations, contact Gwyn Pentzer at Hoosier Uplands, 849-4447, ext. 335, or send an email to: gpentzer@hoosieruplands.org.
