(BEDFORD) - Charles W. Meredith, 39, of Morgantown has been arrested for leading police from several agencies on a high speed chase on Jan. 26,
Meredith was arrested Friday afternoon and taken to the Lawrence County jail. He is facing charges of resisting law enforcement, a Class D felony; failure to stop at a personal injury accident, a Class A misdemeanor; reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor, and driving with a suspended license, a misdemeanor.
The chase began when a Lawrence County police officer attempted to stop the driver for a traffic violation on Kentucky Hollow Road near Needmore.
The driver then fled west on Trogdon Road, onto Ind. 37 and continued south.
The officer then reported the occupants of the vehicle were throwing what looked like baggies out of the car window near Hills Construction.
The vehicle crashed around midnight on Walton Road in Washington County. More than 18 police officers were involved in the chase.
Washington County Sheriff Claude Combs was standing outside his residence on State Road 60 West, when the car came by. He estimated the speed at 80 miles per hour.
Earlier reports estimated the car to have been traveling at up to 100 mph. Combs says the vehicle hit stop sticks which had been placed by police on Ind. 60 near his driveway.
The vehicle continued on about a half mile, turning right on West Washington School Road, cut through the Westview Church parking lot and across a field, crashing into an embankment on Walton Road.
The driver fled on foot.
According to the police log, a female passenger, Rachael E. Aldridge, was injured. She was flown by air ambulance to University of Louisville hospital for a broken nose and facial injuries and was later released and would be returning to her home in Martinsville.
Utilizing thermal imaging units, local officers searched the area for several hours in an attempt to locate the driver, but were unsuccessful.
The driver could not be located, but local police did identify him and notified other agencies that they were looking for him.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig, police received information from Brown County officers that Meredith was at a home in that area.
Meredith was taken to the Brown County jail, where he was held on a warrant for an unrelated matter until LCPD officers picked him up Friday afternoon, Craig says.
