(MEDORA) - Medora Community Schools may have a different way of getting electricity after an offer from an Indianapolis-based company to install solar panels on the school’s roof.
Jordan Richart of the The Banner reports that the project would come at no cost as long as the company can amend a recent agreement that has not worked as promised.
Superintendent Tom Judd says the proposal comes after the company oversaw Medora schools' project to replace heating and air conditioning units on the building 26 years ago and the gymnasium project in 2011.
That project was to save the corporation between $18,000 and $19,000 each year, the company said, but Judd says the school has not seen the savings.
The company gave the school $7,000 because they didn't receive the savings.
Andy Cooper from Johnson Melloh Solutions says the company wants to save the school system money and it would be one of the first of its kind.
The system comes at a cost of $180,000 and would save the school about 52,000 kilowatt hours or $4,700 a year in energy costs.
Judd says he is interested in the renewable energy shares that could be sold if the school does not use them and would give the school great publicity since it would be one-of-a-kind.
The school board will make a decision next month after they study the costs of the project.
