(OOLITIC) - The MATHCOUNTS Competition Program is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests.
The 2013 local Chapter contest held at Oolitic Middle School on Saturday resulted in four unique results.
Oolitic won the team contest despite a penalty for competing with only three members. All three members are advancing to the state contest.
Jacob Bair, a sixth grade student from Bedford Middle School is the first sixth grade student from the county to place in the top four scores. He placed third overall.
And all three NLCS Middle Schools and St. Vincent DePaul School all have students advancing to the state.
Jasmine Singh, a home school student, competed locally and will also advance to the state. She placed fourth in individual scores.
Joining Bair and Singh at the March 9 State MathCounts contest held at Purdue University will be Oolitic students Cody Martin, Cameron Kraese, and Britain Weddle. Makenzie Godsey advances from St. Vincent. Martin won the right to advance as individual, as a member of top team, and as the CountDown Round.
Others competing include: Daniel Strunk, Nick Schershel, Hannah Spires, and Hanna Hatfield from Bedford and Annabelle Zile, Marc Staggs, Hadley Hawkins, and Karoline West from St. Vincent.
This is the 30th year for MathCounts contests, with local contests being held nearly every year. College scholarships, trips, and numerous smaller prizes are awarded through donations from sponsoring organizations. Saturday, all students competing earned certificates, pins, t-shirts, snacks, and lunch for them and their family members present.
Coaches include: Denise Buckingham for Bedford Middle School, Bob Ruble at Oolitic and Rebecca Floyd at St. Vincent.
The program exists in all 50 states plus U.S. territories and the Department of Defense and State Department schools.
