(FRENCH LICK) - Orange County REMC along with its power supplier Hoosier Energy is sponsoring an energy efficiency seminar for local poultry growers and producers on March 11 at the French Lick Springs Hotel Conference Center from 8:30 am to 1pm.
Energy efficiency professionals with expertise in agriculture-based operations will present the half-day morning program. EnSave, known for providing farm audits, consulting, training, and education services in the United States for more than 20 years, will educate cooperative members in achieving goals to save energy and reduce environmental impact.
Members interested in incorporating energy efficiency on their farms will learn the
benefits of upgrading lighting, fans, motors and ventilation. As well as understanding
demand management and identifying funds available for improvements.
Attendees will be able to view various types of agricultural lighting equipment and receive
a best-practices guidebook for poultry production.
The seminar, with lunch provided, is open to Orange County REMC members only at no

Energy efficiency on the farm
The March 11 seminar at French Lick will outline ways for poultry growers and producers to integrate energy and cost-saving improvements into current operations.
The following topics will be covered:
* Lighting upgrades. Comparisons of different lighting systems including
incandescent, compact fluorescent, high pressure sodium and light emitting diode.
* Effects of lighting on birds. The life cycle of different types of lighting and quality
standards for lighting in poultry facilities in the U.S.
* Fans and motors. Maintenance and replacement information. Ventilation and cooling. Effective means for ventilating operations including tunnel versus natural ventilation. Information on evaporative cooling systems,including foggers/misters, spray bar systems and recirculating cooling cells.
* Demand Management. The importance of demand management programs on
reducing energy usage.
* Funding sources. Learn about availability of grants, loans, federal tax credits and
electric cooperative incentives.
