(UNDATED) -The river bottoms near Ewing and Brownstown in Jackson County are packed with sandhill cranes.
The birds can be seen every morning and again late afternoon.
The birds gather in huge numbers each evening, flying in from the fields where they have spent the day. Just after daybreak, they leave to continue foraging in the fields.
It's an impressive sight; some fields are literally wall-to-wall with the tall, stately birds and small flocks also fill the air, long legs dangling. Some are close to the road, offering great views.
And speaking of birds, this weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count, sponsored by Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society. It started Friday, Feb. 15 and continues through today.
Anyone interested is invited to participate; bird watchers of all ages and abilities are welcome. It takes as little as 15 minutes or you can count for as long as you like each day. Participants tally the number of individual birds of each species that they see during the count period, then enter the information on the GBBC web site. This year, reports will be accepted from anywhere in the world.
As the count progresses, anyone with Internet access can explore what is being reported from their own communities or anywhere in the United States or the world. Participants may also send in photos of the birds they see.
