(SALEM) - The Washington County Council and county commissioners have agreed to allow the county highway department to fill two vacancies at the county highway department.
Marcia Walker of the Leader Democrat reports that they also agreed to a request from Sheriff Claude Combs to fill a 911 dispatcher position.
Because of a hiring freeze initiated by the county council last year, the filling of any vacant position requires the approval of both the county council and the county commissioners. The action took place during a joint meeting of the commissioners and the council.
John Fultz, president of the commissioners, mentioned that two drivers had retired. He added that positions are not paid from the county's general fund, but from the motor vehicle highway fund.
Both boards approved filling all three positions. The positions needed to be filled as quickly as possible.
