(SALEM) - Washington County’s Animal Control Officer Randy Lee is investigating a dog-bite case involving a pit bull and a 5-year-old girl.
Marcia Walker, of the Leader-Democrat reports, the incident happened Friday, March 8, at a residence on West State Road 150, Hardinsburg.
According to a press release issued by the sheriff's department, no one knows what provoked the incident. The youngster was taken to the Orange County hospital emergency room by private vehicle. The family has been very cooperative and gave the dog to Lee for a 10-day quarantine period, after which the animal is to be euthanized.
A report posted on WLKY's Web site said the child was in a room playing when the incident happened and that the bite was so severe, she was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital. The dog is named Ruger and is 1 1/2 years old.
Rick Stewart, animal control officer for Salem, confirmed the dog is being held at the city's animal shelter, but did not know details of the incident, since it happened in the county. He did say the quarantine period ends March 18.
"Our mission down here is to take care of the dog as we would any other dog," Stewart said. "We care for the dog regardless of breed. I know they are investigating, the investigation is continuing... the county is the one working it and doing the investigation."
Stewart said the dog is scared but that personnel at the shelter have had no trouble with him. He added that the shelter is holding another dog in quarantine, a boxer that bit someone.
This is the second incidence in Washington County this year involving a pit bull biting a child.
