(MITCHELL) - The Persimmon Festival Committee, asked the Mitchell city council to extend the boundaries of the festival a block.
Mayor Gary Pruett says the extension would not expand the festival, but would keep out temporary vendors from setting up close to the festival, who benefit by make money from festival participants, without paying to be an official part of the festival.
When vendors set up near the festival, they aren't required to comply with the rules and pricing set forth by the festival committee.
Having vendors setting up outside the festival hurts the local nonprofits that comply with the rules and use the money they earn from the festival to support the local community.
The council voted to extend the festival boundaries one block west to Ninth Street, a block south to Mississippi Avenue and a block north to Warren Street.
Any temporary vendors setting up inside those boundaries must receive permission from the festival committee
