(BROWNSTOWN) - Jackson County Commissioners will lend a hand to a new festival in Brownstown after approving several requests from festival organizers this week.
Jordan Richart, of The Banner reports, Wilma Wessel, representative of the Artsfest organized by Brownstown Ewing Main Street (BEMS), asked if the county could open the courthouse during the festival Saturday, April 27. She said organizers needed restroom facilities available for attendees, but also wanted to make the courthouse part of a historical walking tour.
There will also be a Volkswalk that day. A Volkswalk is a group of people that walk every weekend and they always learn about local history; we're rich with local history.
The courthouse is on the state historic register. Wessel said the festival was receiving help with history of the courthouse from Joe Robertson and Blake Hackman to present to festival attendees. She added the Volkswalk with include several stops for a brief presentation on Jackson County's history. There will be eight stops on the walk, with someone at each location to share history facts.
Wessel also requested a section of Sugar Street in Brownstown be closed for the festival so the Jackson County History Center could serve food. She also requested the festival borrow the county parks' picnic tables. Commissioners approved all the requests.
Artsfest will feature area artisans and their work. Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day at Livery Stable in Brownstown and W.R. Ewing in Ewing. Wessel said the festival is a chance to celebrate the community and bring exposure to area businesses downtown.
"The festival is not a fundraiser," she said. "It is to showcase our community and artists, and give ourselves a pat on the back. We also hope to encourage people to shop locally."
The festival also will promote the Jackson County Community Theatre's performance of Catfish Moon, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, at the Royal-Off-the-Square Theatre.
