(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe Lake has named Jeff Frey of Heltonville as its 2012 Volunteer of the Year.
Frey volunteered almost 50 hours at the lake last year. Much of the time was in painting, landscaping and exhibit construction for the Paynetown Activity Center.
Frey also removed invasive species, painted bulletin boards and participated in the Citizen Scientist program, collecting data on plants and animals at Monroe Lake.
"Jeff has truly been a blessing," said Jill Vance, Monroe Lake's naturalist. "He often stops by just to see if there's anything he can help with."
Monroe Lake also awarded an Honorable Mention to Linda Lightner. Lightner volunteered 28 hours, primarily working on activity and exhibit development for the Activity Center.
Individual volunteers and groups donated almost 1,000 hours to Monroe Lake in 2012.
Anyone interested in volunteering at Monroe Lake should contact Vance at (812) 837-9967 or jvance@dnr.IN.gov, or pick up a brochure at the Activity Center, located next to the beach at Paynetown State Recreation Area.
Monroe Lake is at 4850 South State Road 446, Bloomington, 47401.
