(MARTINSVILLE) - A Martinsville man died early Tuesday morning in an apartment fire.
The name of the victim has not been released by the Morgan County Coroner pending notification of the victim's family.
According to Martinsville Police Officer Blake Long The man was found unconscious on a bed with a cigarette burning on a blanket next to him.
Long says there was a burn hole in the man's mattress and his oxygen tube was on top of the burn. He said the tube had been burned in half.
The fire was reported at 4:40 a.m., and Long says when he arrived at the apartment on South Drive the fire had been put out by a resident in the apartment. Long could not locate a pulse so he began CPR on the man until Martinsville firefighters arrived at the apartment with an automated external defibrillator.
The man was transported to Indiana University Health Morgan Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m.
Long says another person who lived in the apartment told him she heard the man calling for help. She found the mattress on fire. She used a blanket to extinguish the fire before she called for help.
Fire damage was limited to the mattress and some blankets. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
