(HELTONVILLE) - A 33-year-old Bedford man, who was missing, was located Saturday afternoon after being spotted by the pilot of an Indiana State Police helicopter.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig the investigation began Friday afternoon when police received a call from the missing man.
"At this time were are not releasing his name," Craig says. "He called the department from a cell phone around 1 pm Friday saying he was in a wooded area and being possible shot at. The man sounded as if he was intoxicated or possible under the influence of narcotics."
Officers went to an area of Ind. 58 and Todd Lane and searched for the man.
"We were unable to locate him," Craig says. "Officers did not hear any shots being fired or see any disturbances and were unable to locate anyone in the area."
Officers then contacted relatives of the man.
"The man has family in that area and they told officers he often times walks in the woods and that family would try to contact him to see if there was an issue," Craig says.
Then just after midnight on Saturday officers were told the man could possible be at a home on Todd Lane.
"Officers went to that home and were unable to locate the man," Craig says. "Officers talked to family members and they said if they didn't hear from him they would be later Saturday morning to file a missing person's report."
Then later on Saturday morning, officers received another call saying the man was at another home.
"Officers went there and again could not locate the man," Craig says. "Then around 11 am the family came on station and filed a missing persons report."
That is when the department gathered forces and began a ground and air search for the missing man.
Craig say, officers from Lawrence County, Indiana State Police, conservation officers and several volunteer firefighters went into the woods and searched for the man.
"The pilot of the ISP helicopter spotted the man," Craig says. "When he saw the helicopter he got up off the ground and began moving from the area."
Volunteer firefighters located the man and assisted him to a waiting ambulance.
"His injuries were from being exposed to elements," Craig says. "The case is still under investigation and we believe there is no foul play involved."
