Trooper Gillespie, from Bedford was killed in the line of duty June 8, 1962 while en-route to Mitchell responding to a call of assistance. Gillespie who was traveling at a high-rate of speed with his lights and siren on was forced from the roadway when a pickup truck slowed in front of him.
Leaving the highway to avoid the truck, Trooper Gillespie swerved back on the highway to avoid another car in his path and that is when his patrol car was hit by yet another vehicle.
Trooper Gillespie died as a result of injuries he suffered in the crash.
