(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Hiking Club will host its spring Volksmarch on April 13 at the Paynetown State Recreation Area at Lake Monroe.
Both a 6K and 11K walk will be offered. Walkers may walk for the fun of it or those who wish to receive IVV credit may pay a fee for credits or medals.
The walk will begin at 9 a.m. with the last start at noon. All walkers need to be off the course by 3 p.m. The event is open to everyone and each participant must obtain a start card which is to be turned in at the finish. This allows organizers to know when everyone is off the course. Children under 12 years of age who wish to participate, must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Walkers will follow the Pate Hollow Trail through a portion of the Hoosier National Forest. The trail is on well-maintained dirt paths, with some roots and rocks along the way. It is not suitable for strollers but pets are welcome and must be on a leash and under control at all times.
There are several hills, but no really long hills. Walkers will cross a few streams with stepping stones as crossings. There are views of Monroe Lake on part of the trail and hikers will be surrounded by old-growth forest. Hiking boots and walking sticks are recommended.
The hike will go on rain or shine. Water will be provided at the start/finish area. There is no water along the trail. Restrooms are also available at the start/finish area.
The event is sanctioned by the AVA and IVV.
The Paynetown SRA is off of State Road 446 southeast of Bloomington.
Bedford Hiking Club also sponsors two year-round walks -- Spring Mill State Park (starting point at the front desk at Spring Mill Inn) and the Bedford Limestone walk (starting point at Hardees restaurant at 16th Street and Washington Avenue).
