(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Board of Public Works and Safety instructed City Attorney Greg Pittman, to pursue an option to purchase a lot at 14th and J streets, the former site of Cherio Liquors.
Pittman was authorized to pay $1,000 for the option, which expires Dec. 31.
The city seeks to move the old Milwaukee depot to that location and use it as a trail head and possibly as headquarters for local tourism.
An earlier strategy to transport the depot to the west side of the square opposite Harp Commons sparked objections, because of potential parking problems.
Mayor Shawna Girgis says an alternate downtown location for the historic building has been identified if efforts to buy the 14th and J site fail.
The depot is currently owned by the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association, but BUEA has agreed to donate the building to the city if it secures the Stellar Community Award it is seeking.
