(BEDFORD) - The National Association of Conservation Districts will celebrate the 58th annual Stewardship Week April 28-May 5, themed, “Where Does Your Water Shed?”
District Coordinator Marsha Ralston and Technician/Educator Whitney Baldwin are staff for the Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District. The district was formed to help people with education and technical service in conserving soil, water and related resources.
During Stewardship Week, Baldwin will provide soil stewardship sessions to school classrooms that have requested a program. Students will receive "Where Does Your Water Shed" bookmarks. Both public libraries in the county will receive bookmarks as well. Soil stewardship place mats will be provided to restaurants and students in grade five will receive soil stewardship activity booklets.
The SWCD sponsored a poster contest with the theme "Where Does Your Water Shed?" and received 463 entries. The overall grand champions were honored at the SWCD annual meeting Feb. 11 and will advance to the state competition.
"Clean water is important to everyone," said National Association of Conservation Districts President Earl Garber. "Watersheds come in all shapes and sizes. They cross county, state and national boundaries. Every inch of the land on planet Earth is part of a watershed. In the continental U.S., there are 2,100 watersheds; if we include Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico, the count rises to 2,267. No matter where you are right now, you are in a watershed."
