(ORLEANS) - Several deadlines are fast approaching for events for the 2013 annual Orleans Dogwood Festival.
The festival will be April 27-May 5 in Orleans. Entries are being sought for several events.
Amateur Photo Contest
The Dogwood Festival Amateur Photo Contest deadline is May 1. Entries may be dropped off at the Progress-Examiner office.
Judged categories: People, animals, nature and miscellaneous; and there are black and white and color divisions in all categories. Entries must be at least 5x7 inches and be either framed or matted, but not both. Entries should include name and phone number of the photographer and the category being entered. An entry fee of $1 will be charged for each entry; limit of three entries for each photographer and entries must be the work of the photographer. No professional photographers may enter.
First and second place in each category will be awarded. People's Choice will be selected through quarter votes. There will also be a "Where in Orleans was this photo taken?" contest.
Photos will be displayed at the Unity Hall at Orleans Christian Church from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 2-3; and from 9 a.m., to 5 p.m. on May 4. Entries may be picked up on Saturday after the parade or on Monday at the Progress-Examiner.

Rain Gutter Regatta
Orleans Cub Scout Pack 384 will host its second annual Rain Gutter Regatta on May 2 on the square.
The cub scouts welcome anyone to build a sail boat and join in the evening of fun and friendly competition that will begin at 6 p.m.
Boat kits are on sale at the town hall and the Orleans Public Library. Kits are $4 each and include instructions on how to build a race ready sail boat.
Parade entries
Orleans Dogwood Festival Parade Chairman Randy Clark said entries are now being accepted for the 45th annual Dogwood Parade set for noon May 4 in historic downtown Orleans.
The parade is a main attraction of the week-long festival and draws a large crowd each year. This year's grand marshal will be longtime Orleans businessman and barber Elmo Wolfe.
Entry forms are available at www.orleansdogwoodfestival.com and also may be found inside the Dogwood souvenir program, The Orleans Progress Examiner newspaper or picked up from the Orleans town offices or the Orleans Public Library.
Trophies will be awarded to floats, bands, walking units, antique cars, classic auto, equestrian and other categories.
The parade will assemble at the Orleans Junior-Senior High School, beginning at 11 a.m. with judging of units beginning shortly thereafter.
"In Spring, Dogwoods Beckon Us Home" is the festival theme. Parade participants are asked to carry out that theme with their entries.
