(ELLETTSVILLE) - Jess Turner, of Ellettsville, was named the 2012 national winner of the Merrill Jones music composition prize for young concert band music.
This prize is sponsored by the National Band Association and is one of the major wind composition prizes in the U.S.
His winning piece, "The Exultant Heart," was commissioned in 2011 by Demosthenes Dimitrakoulakos for the school band at the International School of Luxembourg. Turner's piece will be published in the U.S. by Wingert-Jones Music Publishers.
On March 7, Turner attended the premiere performance of his latest work for wind ensemble in Tampa, Fla. "Black Bolt!," based on the fantastical super-hero of the same name, was commissioned and performed by Dr. John Lynch and the University of Georgia Wind Ensemble at the national convention of the American Bandmasters Association. Turner's music may be found at www.bluejaywaymusic.com.
