(ODON) - Since the tragic death of Samantha Porter on Sept. 28 in an auto accident, various events have been held to honor her memory and for a scholarship fund created in her memory.
Nate Smith of the Washing Times Herald reports that the community will continue its giving ways with the Singing for Sam benefit, set for 7 p.m. tonight at the Simon J. Graber community building.
"We wanted to do something to help," Co-organizer Ron Bratton said. "(Co-organizer) Jeff VanderMel and I know music better than everything else." Therefore, the benefit was born. Many local singers and musical talents, including Bratton and VanderMel, are donating their services for this special concert. The two, along with Trevin Sims, Braden Lawyer, Dave Meurer and Shawn Buis, have formed a "One Time Only" band for the concert.
All of the players have been in bands for a long time. Lawyer, Buis and VanderMel all play for Odon Christian Church. The band will be opening for two singers that are well known.
Megan Lengacher may be young, but she is no stranger to the stage. She has opened for many acts at the Graber complex, Bratton said. Last summer, she opened for Christian group Building 429 and has a large following.
"She is a big hit out in the community," Bratton said.
Lexi Reed is another local young singer that has a very large voice. She has performed at many venues across the area and has a large following.
"When I first heard her, I knew who the songs I had written were for," Bratton said.
Bratton said the community has come out and helped a lot for the benefit.
"We have a lot of volunteers and that is helping more than anything else," Bratton said.
Porter died on Sept. 28 heading home from Senior Night festivities on CR 950E in a one-car accident. Charity bake sales, dinners and even a 5K/10K run has been held.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at www.jeffvandermel.wix.com/singingforsam. They can also be purchased at the door. Concessions and t-shirts will also be available. For more information, consult the website.
