(BEDFORD) - Mitchell Road was closed for several hours Wednesday afternoon after a multiple fatal crash.
Bedford police confirmed there were three dead and two were flown to Indianapolis hospitals.
Witnesses on the scene say that a van crossed the center line and collided with the trailer of a Lineal Contracting Inc.
Police officers, at least three ambulances and fire crews were called to the scene about 4:21 p.m. in front of Hoosier Petes at 28th Street.
When the accident happen residents as far away as 25th and J streets thought there was an explosion.
Robert Prow, a motorist, was one of the first on the scene.
"There was black smoke (coming from the minivan) and then it blew up like two sticks of dynamite," he says."We got out of our vehicles to see if we could help... it was bad so bad."
Prow says one female did not have a pulse.
"That is when the firefighters arrived and they took over," Prow says. "There was just nothing we could do to help them."
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says the accident is still under investigation.
According to a press release, a northbound minivan collided with a southbound utility truck and trailer owned by Lineal Contracting Inc.
Parsley says three people in the van died and two others were flown by helicopter to Indianapolis hospitals.
The driver of the truck and trailer was not injured.
Parsley says no other information is available at this time.
