Heartworm Clinic April 1-6

Last updated on Monday, April 1, 2013

(BEDFORD) - Local veterinarians are reminding pet owners to schedule their dog’s heartworm test appointment during the heartworm clinic next week.

Several local vets will offer the test at a reduced rate. The clinic is from April 1-6.

Dogs develop heartworm after a mosquito bite. The larvae is spread in the blood stream and leads to congestive heart failure and, if left untreated, death. If caught early, heartworm is treatable, but the treatment is expensive.

Once a dog is tested for heartworm and found to be free of the parasite, veterinarians recommend putting your pet on a year-round preventative to protect it.

Dr. Jerry Rusch of Spring Mill Veterinary Service in Mitchell said a mild winter from a year ago produced a larger insect population last summer, which has resulted in more cases of heartworm in the county.

Participating vets in the heartworm clinic are Spring Mill Veterinary Service on Ind. 60, Bedford Veterinary Medical Centre on Oolitic Road and Animal Care Clinic on Mitchell Road.
