(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indiana University sorority is apologizing for throwing a party that made fun of the homeless amid criticism from advocates who say the theme was insensitive.
Kappa Delta president Aubrey McMahon apologized on the chapter's website and called the choice of themes "a poor one" that does not meet the sorority's values.
The sorority plans to work with its national organization and local advisers to develop a plan for sensitivity training and community service.
National Kappa Delta leaders said in a statement that they would investigate the "inappropriate event theme."
Executive director Christy Shepard of the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention in Indianapolis says the flap over the party could serve as a learning opportunity.
