National Guard Gearing Up For Furloughs

Last updated on Friday, April 26, 2013

(UNDATED) - The Indiana National Guard is gearing up for federal sequester furloughs.

Lt. Col. Cathy Van Bree says come June, 1000 full-time guard staffers will be furloughed. Van Bree says the furloughs amount to a 20-percent pay cut for staffers.

"What that furlough means is that there will be 14 days of unpaid forced leave where military technicians will not be able to claim pay for that day nor work at our facilities for that day each week," Van Bree says.

Van Bree says community relations support for the guard has also been affected. She says the guard will not conduct flyovers during the upcoming Indianapolis 500.

She says other ceremonial flyovers and community events will also be impacted. She says it comes down to saving money on fuel, transportation, ammunition and other logistics.

However, Van Bree adds the guard maintains 14,000 service members and public safety won't be compromised.
