(UNDATED) - A man whose blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit crashed into the front of Pitts Package Store on South Main Street last week.
Stephanie Taylor Ferriell of the Leader-Democrat reports that Garrett White, 51, 1206 E. Hackberry St., Salem, is charged with two misdemeanors; OWI and OWI with a BAC of .15 or more. His BAC measured .20, according to a blood test performed at St. Vincent Salem Hospital. Indiana's legal limit is .08.
City police responded to a report of a vehicle crash at 6:45 p.m. Friday, March 29 and found a 1993 Nissan in the front doorway of the liquor store. White was in the driver's seat.
Officers noted his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was very slurred and there was an odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his person. When asked if he was OK, the report says he responded, "I'm OK, I'm just drunk."
Because he was complaining of chest pain, the Washington County Ambulance Service was called and White was transported to St. Vincent.
After he was released by the staff, shortly after 8:30 p.m., White was arrested and transported to the Washington County Detention Center.
