(COMMISKEY) - A 61-year-old Seymour woman drowned Friday afternoon after wrecking her car into a pond in Jennings County, police said.
Elsie Day was pronounced dead by Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour after being transported by ambulance from the scene.
Jackson County Sheriff's Department Deputy Adam Nicholson said Saturday afternoon he was the first to respond after dispatch received a 911 call from Day's cell phone around noon.
"The report was that a female had been involved in an accident, was in a pond on a residential property and was unable to get out of the vehicle," he said.
Day had been driving a 2002 Buick Rendezvous westbound on Commiskey Pike near the Jackson-Jennings county line, Nicholson added.
Jennings County Sheriff's Department also responded, along with other officers from Jackson County including Jeff Walters, Darin Downs and diver Jesse Hutchinson.
Nicholson said it appeared that Day had run off the road and over-corrected, leading her to lose control of the car, which ended up in the pond.
