(BLOOMINGTON) - Police arrested Mathew Fleenor, of Bloomington, after he attempted to strangle a woman during a domestic fight Monday.
According to Bloomingon Sgt. Joe Crider, police Fleenor was fighting with his 22-year-old girlfriend, when he jumped on top of her and then threatened to kill her by placing his hands over her mouth and nose.
Crider says the woman escaped but then Fleenor allegedly grabbed the woman and placed a pillow over her face and attempted to smother her.
Crider says the woman was able to break free and that is when Fleenor allegedly blocked the doorway and started swinging a baseball bat.
Then Fleenor grabbed the woman tied a bed sheet around her neck and tried to tie the other end around a bar in a closet. The woman was able to escape.
Fleenor then jumped off a balcony and ran before police could arrive.
Fleenor was stopped by police not far from the home. He told police the two had been arguing, but denies trying to kill the woman.
Crider says, Fleenor admitted to covering the woman's face with his hands, but stopped when he noticed she couldn't breathe. He also admitted to placing a pillow over her face and that he had a ball bat, but told police he never swung it at his girlfriend.
Crider says both Fleenor and the woman had been drinking before the fight.
Fleenor was charged with strangulation, intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal confinement.
