(BLOOMINGTON) - Two teams of high school students from Bloomington are preparing for a summer trip to Japan to compete in a solar bicycle race.
The teams from Bloomington High School South will travel to Japan in late July to compete in the World Solar Rally.
The Herald-Times reports that each of the race's competing bikes has a lithium battery that's powered by a solar panel on the back of the bike and runs a motor which gives riders and extra boost.
During the race, each student will ride 15 miles as fast as they can.
Bloomington South student Emily Moon says she's excited to be from Bloomington and to "be able to go to a whole new country and do something unique and different."
