(BEDFORD) - Emergency workers were called to a home at 20 Patton Hill Road Thursday morning after the homeowner hit a hand grenade with his lawn mower.
According to Marshall Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chad Hayes, police and firefighters were notified about the hand grenade at 9:46 a.m.
"The new homeowner was mowing and cleaning up around the property when he hit the grenade with the lawn mower blade," Hayes says.
The pineapple grenade had been buried in the ground for a long time.
"It had been buried so long we couldn't tell if it was deactivated or live," Hayes added.
That is when the Explosive Ordinance Division at Crane was called.
"The grenade was inert and just a casing with no explosives inside," Hayes says.
Experts from EOD warns residents that find items like a grenade or other possible explosives to call police immediately.
"They are experts on handling explosives and everyone should err on the side of safety," Hayes added. "Always call so the item can be checked out and disposed of properly."
