(UNDATED) - Hundreds of Hoosiers are taking a moment to pause and reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day.
They turned out for the 500 Festival Memorial Service on Monument Circle. Top state and city officials also took part in the service that honors the Hoosier military personnel who gave their lives for freedom.
World War II Veteran Fred Selm says he believes many people, especially young people, don't know about the sacrifices made by many military personnel. He says he cannot forget the hundreds of thousands of troops who gave their lives for freedom.
Gene Griffin also came for the service. He lost his son in Afghanistan. Griffin says nothing teaches a more profound less than losing a loved one in war.
