(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University’s efforts to recruit more black students and faculty to its Bloomington campus have fallen well short of the school’s goals, but some on campus hope a key hiring in a campus diversity office will help turn the tide.
Graduate student Carl Darnell tells The Herald-Times IU figures show African-Americans have accounted for an average of 4 percent of students since 1975. That's despite a 2007 goal to double underrepresented minority students by 2013-14.
President Michael McRobbie says minority numbers on IU's other campuses have improved but acknowledges it has been harder to recruit minority students to the Bloomington campus.
University officials have hired a new associate vice president for the office of Diversity, Equity and Multicultural Affairs to help guide minority leadership programs.
