(BLOOMINGTON) - In the 53 times Bloomington’s Northside Exchange Club has named a police officer of the year, an award had yet to be given posthumously — until now.
Keith Cash of the Indiana University Police Department was posthumously honored as the 2013 Police Officer of the Year during an awards ceremony Thursday at the American Legion. Cash, who was chief of department from 2010 to 2013, died suddenly the evening of March 20 at the age of 50 as a result of aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic heart valve that can lead to congestive heart failure.
Cash was nominated by Laury Flint, IU's interim police chief, who along with Capt. Thomas Lee and other members of the IU police force, accepted the award on Cash's behalf.
Officer Lloyd Hawkins of the Bloomington Police Department, officer Mark Freeman of the Ellettsville Police Department, troopers Josh Allen and Kent Rohlfing of the Indiana State Police and Sgt. Randy Jacobs of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office were also nominated for the award.
The club also presented a plaque of appreciation to the Bloomington Police Department, recognizing the 41 years that former department chief Mike Hostetler served with the department. Hostetler retired in 2008 and died in 2012.
