(NEEDMORE) - Martha Turner, a fourth-grade teacher at Needmore Elementary School, received the Indiana Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 2013 Elementary Teacher of the Year by Commander Rodney Funk on April 6.
VFW recognizes one teacher from elementary schools, junior high schools and high schools throughout Indiana who teach Americanism and patriotism to their students. They also look at teachers who spend time teaching citizenship education - at least half of the school day in a classroom environment - and promote America's history, traditions and institutions effectively.
Turner's journey toward the state award started with her selection as the Elementary Teacher of the Year for the Henry Dwyer VFW Post 9297 (Crane), and then she was selected as the Elementary Teacher of the Year for the Indiana Department 7th District.
For the accolade, Turner received the Crystal Apple Teacher Award, numerous citations and cash/gift card awards.
