(BEDFORD) - For the past decade, Lawrence County’s youth soccer Orbit program has played its matches within a tightly confined area at Otis Park.
This year, the action shifted to Wilson Park.
Mike Mitchell, Bedford's parks superintendent, explained that his crews are in the process of upgrading the fields at Otis.
They have leveled and cleared an area for new fields on the east side of the parking lot. Mitchell explained the new fields will extend near the picnic areas to the south. Allowing people to watch the games from the hill, where there is plenty of shad and a picnic area close by.
Mitchell says the old fields at Otis also are under renovation.
A volunteer has agreed to grade and level the area this summer. Crews will then resod the area in August and by next spring there will be substantial grass on the fields allowing teams to begin play again in the spring of 2014.
Other plans include removal of the old tennis courts west of the soccer facility. Crews will remove the fencing and place it at the smaller soccer area. Removing the tennis court will allow for additional parking.
A volunteer has also agreed to fix the roofs on the bathrooms and concession stand.
