(SALEM) - Salem Police are investigating two fires they say are linked to Ron Walton, of Salem.
According to Salem Detective Scott Ratts, the first fire was reported at 2:30 a.m. last Wednesday in the 1000 block of McCullough Road. The Livonia Fire Department was called to extinguish a log skidder that was on fire. The skidder is owned by Craig Wilson, but police were told when the call came in the skidder belonged to Walton.
The Leader-Democrat reports, at 5:58 a.m. there was a report of a GMC Envoy on fire at the Maple Leaf Apartments, located off West Market Street in Salem. The Salem Fire Department found the Envoy engulfed in flames and was on the scene for more than an hour.
Walton told police, he lives in the apartments and was on his back porch when he smelled smoke. He came around the building and found his Envoy on fire. He told firefighters he grabbed his keys and pulled the vehicle to a parking lot away from the apartment building.
Walton says that is when the vehicle began exploding and debris was flying everywhere.
Walton told police smoke was coming out of the driver's side window and when he opened the back hatch the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
Detective Ratts says the state fire marshal was contacted and is investigating both fire. The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the Salem Police Department.
