(BEDFORD) - The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County’s “Ugly Duck Derby” fundraiser is set for 6-9 p.m. Friday at Thornton Park at the John Lowery Pool.
The event will include entertainment, food and beverage sales by local businesses and the belly buster competition.
You still have time to "adopt" a duck for a donation to the club. Ducks are available at the Parks Department and the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, on 16th Street. Prices are $5 for one duck or $20 for five ducks. All proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County. The goal is to get the newly formed club on solid financial ground.
On Friday thousands of "adopted" yellow ducks will zoom down the pool slide and float into lanes. As ducks cross the finish line, they will be plucked from the pool and the owners of those ducks will win prizes.
An anonymous donor pledged $250,000 to the merged club if the club could raise $250,000 on its own. The club currently has raised $220,000. If the club does not meet the goal after the Ugly Duck Race they will hold a golf scramble in June.
The duck race is the highlight, but it just may be upstaged by the Belly Buster Contest. Ten local celebrities will vie to make the biggest splash in the pool.
Celebs are Erick Hayes, millwright for Bowen Engineering, Kurt Godlevske, BNL girls basketball coach, Steven Gillespie Morning Show Host and DJ of Super Oldies 105.5, Henry Hill of Hubler, Gary Dorsett, Bedford Parks Department recreation director, Bedford firefighter Jeff Key, Bedford Middle School teacher Bill Deckard, Gene McCracken, executive director of the Economic Growth Council, Deonte Mack, strength coach at Indiana University and Paul Spreen, who played football at Rose-Hulman.
Eight of the 10 will dive in round one to determine who will advance to the finals. Two divers will bypass round one by either selling the most ducks or by getting the most "likes" on the Ugly Duck Derby's Facebook page.
Here are just some of the prizes that will be awarded to the winning duck owners: One-week at a Disney World vacation condo, luxury cabin (sleeps 12) in Gatlinburg, 10 by 10 limestone patio with water feature, custom fireplace mantle by Jack Wood, custom-blended coffee for a year from Stone Cutters Cafe and Roastery, Prada sunglasses from Dr. Jim Sowders, one Grecco's pizza a month for a year, $500 gift card for service or tires from Bedford Ford and Colts and IU football tickets.
