(WASHINGTON) - The cause of a house fire in Washington is under investigation.
Firefighters were called to 504 West Main Street Wednesday at 6:48 p.m. after someone reported seeing smoke pouring out of the home.
The rental home owned Mike and Teresa Swartzentruber, of Loogootee, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters battled heavy smoke and the danger of the ceiling collapsing as they searched the house to make sure no one was inside.
Firefighters used an aerial ladder truck to extinguish the blaze and to help keep it from spreading to nearby apartment house, just four feet from the burning house.
Firefighters were on the scene for more than 3 hours.
The home was destroyed and adjacent homes had heat and water damage.
Firefighters were called back at 10:50 p.m. when the fire rekindled.
