(WASHINGTON) - Washington High School added engineering to its areas of excellence at the National SeaPerch Challenge, on Saturday
The SeaPerch Challenge teams each designed, engineered, and constructed a remote controlled underwater robot.
The robots then competed in an underwater obstacle course while the students underwent an oral examination by a committee of engineers.
Of the 4,000 schools throughout the nation that entered in the competition, Washington's two teams qualified in the top 100 to advance to the National SeaPerch Challenge finals at Indianapolis.
Saturday, both of Washington's teams earned national awards. Washington High School's Hatchet Engineering Team, consisting of Andrew Kingslover, Timothy Webb, Alex Evans, Lauren Walker, Ethan Clark, Draven Harvey, and Jacob Gross, placed third in the Deep Water section of the National Competition.
The top honors and the National Championship trophy was won by Washington High School's NJROTC student engineers.
The NJROTC squad also received a special Technical Director's Award for innovation and design. Receiving the award were NJROTC engineering team members, Daniel San Augustin, Laura Rainey, Noah Gaither, and Shyanne Burch.
The advisors of the teams are WHS faculty members, Capt. Neil May and Jay Neuhoff.
Washington was the only school to have two separate teams winning awards at the National finals
