(PAOLI) - The WHAS Crusade for Children annual chicken barbecue fundraiser kicks off Saturday at the Paoli Christian Church.
Serving will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through an unspecified time. Diners can eat in or carry out.
The chief organizer of the event is Paoli's Joe Summers. The funds raised are used to award grants for agencies, schools and hospitals to better the lives of special needs children.
First Chance Center, operated by Orange County Rehabilitative and Developmental Services in Paoli, is one of three entities that serve Orange County and benefited from Crusade grants awarded in 2012.
An amount of $25,000 was awarded to Orange County Rehabilitative and Developmental Services. The South Central Area Special Education Cooperative received $28,500 and Southern Hills Counseling Center Inc. received $10,000.
Catherine Strother, from First Chance Center, reports the dollars generated by the Crusade go toward integrating children who have disabilities with children who aren't disabled.
Melissa Lancaster, from the special education cooperative, spoke at the dinner and reported the money her agency received had been used for Smart Boards and touch-screen technology for students.
Tim Knight represented Southern Hills Counseling Center, which serves seven counties in southern Indiana explained A significant portion of their grants was used to provide services to children and their families who do not have insurance or any other way to pay for services.
