(DAVIESS COUNTY) - A Shoals woman says the hospital where she worked rejected her request for family medical leave to care for her son and then fired her for asking.
Katherine Harner sued Daviess Community Hospital in Washington, Thursday in federal court in Evansville.
The lawsuit says the hospital fired her from her job as a radiological technician last May after denying her request for time off under the Family Medical Leave Act. The hospital had granted Harner leave the previous year.
The federal law requires employers to grant workers unpaid leave of up to 12 weeks to care for seriously ill children. Harner says her son had developed a condition that required out-of-state care.
Hospital officials could not be reached for comment due to the holiday Monday.
