(BLOOMFIELD) - James Matthew “Matt” Hayes has served time in the Department of Corrections and he’s spent time in the Greene County Jail on several occasions in the past.
He was arrested again this week on charges of theft and possession of marijuana.
According to Greene County Sheriff George Dallaire, 47-year-old Hayes is accused of stealing a moped and had marijuana in his pocket when police arrested him.
Anna Rochelle, of the Greene County Daily World reports the moped belonged to a man who worked at Hasler's Oil gas station - it disappeared on Friday, May 24 while he was working. He noticed it was gone when he got off work.
A neighbor told the owner of the moped, he was sitting on his porch reading a newspaper when he saw Hayes walk up to the moped, spin it around and push it out of Hasler's lot then down a driveway toward a nearby house on Judge Street.
The man went to the house and talked to Hayes. The owner said there was a confrontation and Hayes allegedly swung a cane and another woman began swinging a baseball bat at the owner. That is when someone who saw the confrontation called police.
Deputy Dallaire responded along with Deputy Harvey Holt and Det. James O'Malley and Deputy Brad Deckard.
The fight had stopped by the time police arrived. Police questioned Hayes about the stolen moped and at first he denied taking it. Then after police told Hayes there were witnesses the responded. "maybe I did."
Officers found the stolen moped under a trap door in the kitchen floor that led to a basement area. The moped was returned to the owner.
