(OOLITIC) - East Oolitic residents are offering a $25 reward for the return of their “Welcome to East Oolitic” sign.
Resident Tug Beal says if the sign is returned, with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who took it, the reward increases to $50.
The sign was stolen some time after June 16.
"The welcome sign was there Sunday," Beal says. "But sometime between then and Tuesday (June 18) someone took the sign down. They even took the bolts holding the sign in place."
Now residents are dealing with someone placing concrete blocks in the middle of East Oolitic Road near Murdock Station Road.
"Sometime during the early morning hours someone is placing the large concrete blocks in the middle of the road and someone is going to get killed or seriously injured," Beal say. "We are all well aware of the speeding traffic on East Oolitic Road but this is not the way to stop it."
Beal says if motorist come flying down East Oolitic Road and don't see the concrete bricks it could be fatal. Police received reports of the concrete bricks in the roadway at 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday and 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
The East Oolitic community is warning motorist of the potential danger.
"If someone is on a motorcycle or in a vehicle and hits those going at a high-rate of speed it will not turn out good," Beal says. "We want everyone to know that this is going on and be careful traveling on East Oolitic Road until the person doing this is caught."
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says officers are making extra patrols in the area and anyone with information on who is placing the concrete bricks in the roadway or sees someone doing to contact police immediately.
