Flash Flood Warning For Lawrence County

Last updated on Thursday, June 6, 2013

(BEDFORD) - The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Lawrence County and South Central Indiana until noon today.

At 7:49 a.m. the National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated slow moving thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall across the warned area with rainfall estimates of over 2 and half inches have fallen over the last 2 hours just southeast of Bedford.

Runoff from this excessive rainfall will cause flash flooding to occur. Some locations that will experience flooding include Bedford.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Dave Holmes warns motorist that many of the county roads are flooded and filled with debris. Crews are currently working to clear the roads of the debris, but motorist need to use extreme caution.

Additional rainfall is occurring and some redevelopment of cells over the same area is continuing.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes. it only takes a few inches of swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles away.
