(MITCHELL) - Former Mitchell mayor Dan Terrell attended Tuesday’s session of the city of Mitchell’s Board of Public Works and Safety to obtain documents relating to the proposed sewer upgrade.
Krystal Shetler of he Times Mail reports that the city submitted a grant application to the Office of Community and Rural Affairs in May hoping to obtain $500,000 in funding to revamp the processing facility.
For the past six months, the city has been working on a plan that would update the facility on Meridian Road. The idea is to update and upgrade equipment, nearly doubling the sewer capacity in the city and extending the life of the facility for at least another 20 years. The project has been estimated to cost $1.85 million.
Terrell said he would like to have a detailed copy of the documents outlining the scope of work that would be done. He also requested a copy of any water and sewer rate studies done in conjunction with the grant application.
He also asked if the project would be bonded locally, and Mayor Gary Pruett said everything will be contingent on whether or not the city receives the grant funding.
Terrell asked why the city wanted to update the sewer project.
"It's tired, worn out," Pruett replied. Pruett told Terrell the city was not being forced by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to complete the project.
City officials told Terrell they would look up the documents he requested and get those to him.
No other issues were discussed by the board. The next board of works meeting is set for 4 p.m. June 25 at City Hall.
