(BLOOMINGTON) - An Indianapolis man whose 50 guns were seized when Blooomington police found him watching a bar where IU student Lauren Spierer was partying the night she went missing is asking a court to make police return his weapons.
The Indiana Court of Appeals heard Robert Redington's appeal Tuesday.
Police have said they don't believe Redington was involved in the 2011 disappearance of Spierer.
Redington wasn't arrested last August when police found him watching Kilroy's through a range finder and discovered two loaded semi-automatic handguns in his pockets and a loaded shotgun in the trunk of his car.
Redington was on the third level of a parking garage across the street from the bar. He told police that it was 66 yards from his position to the front door of Kilroy's and that he had been watching people come and go all evening.
Redington asked officers several questions about missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, who was at the sports bar the night she disappeared, and he claimed that he had come to town to help search for her.
While Redington was undergoing a mental health evaluation at a local hospital, police searched his Indianapolis home and found 48 more weapons, including handguns, rifles and shotguns, police said.
Redington was later diagnosed with a schizotypal personality disorder.
Monroe Circuit Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff ruled in September that Redington is a dangerous man who should not be allowed to possess or use guns, the Herald Times reported.
Redington says police don't have enough evidence to keep the weapons.
